Clients from Google

How to Get Clients with SEO Without an Agency: A Plain Checklist

Here is how to get clients with seo and no agency. Build one page for each service a customer would type into Google. Check that Google has indexed each page, and that something on your own site links to it. Make your Google Business Profile say the same name and phone as your website. Ask for one thing on each page: a booking. That is the whole method, and the rest of this page is how to check each part in plain words.

The Short Answer: Build, Index, Link, Book

Two glosses, once. "Indexed" means Google has read the page and will show it. A "Business Profile" is the free Google listing that puts your business on the map and in the panel beside search results.

Before you pay anyone, know this. According to Google's own guide on whether you need an SEO, Google never accepts money to rank a site, and a poor SEO can damage a site and its reputation; we agree with both points, and we would add that Search Console, the tool that tells you whether your pages are indexed, is free. Check first.

And one disclosure, so you know what you are reading. We have recorded no client count from SEO on our own sites. We have index counts and impressions, with dates, and they are small. We publish them below because an owner deserves the starting line, not a promise. Our page on local seo mistakes shows the do and don't list with the same reads, and according to its own data, the mistake we made in 2024 is the one we warn about first.

Is It Your Fault? Dashboard vs the Sitemap Check

The number that scares owners is the one on the Search Console dashboard. We opened ours on 2026-10-15 and it said 82 pages not indexed. The same afternoon we checked only the pages in our sitemap, the list of pages we submitted, and found 25.

Source, 2026-10-15What it countsNot indexed
DashboardEvery address Google ever found on the whole domain82: noindex 12, redirect 4, redirect error 2, not found 1, crawled 29, discovered 34
Sitemap checkThe 105 pages we submitted25: discovered 16, crawled 5, unknown 4

Two more glosses. A "sitemap" is the file on your site that lists the pages you want Google to read. "Noindex" is a tag that tells Google to keep a page out.

Most of the 82 were pages we never wanted ranked. Our booking app and our agents app sit on subdomains with a noindex tag, on purpose. Two admin addresses redirect to a login. The bare domain and http redirect to the www address. Three old sitemap addresses answer 404. The gap between 82 and 25 was not our pages; it was the dashboard doing its job on addresses that should be out. If your site has an app, a login or an old address, the same is true of yours. Read the rows that name your pages and ignore the total.

Here is what the path found on our site. Five English service pages, /services/ai-agent, /services/chatbot, /services/booking-software, /services/blog and /services/professional-website, failed check 3 and had been "crawled, currently not indexed" since 2026-08-28, while their French twins were indexed. The fix for check 3 was a Services list in the footer of every page, in both languages, live within the hour on 2026-10-15. Our industries pages, one per trade with an intake form each, pass all six, and they are the pages that were indexed.

That jump came from correcting the sitemap, not from a recrawl; Google already held the pages at the other address.

Small, dated, published. A site with an entity and linked pages starts from here. The method that produced every row, from the first read to the request, is what SEO in the age of AI: get your pages indexed, from the API shows step by step, with the same tables and the data per status, and we agree with its one rule: request only what changed.

One Address Per Page and One Page Per Service

You saw one address per page as check 1, and here is why it matters to you. Our other site had every page answering at two addresses, /column and /column/, with a temporary redirect between them. Google kept the version without the slash; the sitemap listed the version with it. Every page in the sitemap was filed as a duplicate of a page Google already had. The repair was one address form, a permanent redirect for the other, and a date on every sitemap entry. Astro trailing slash on Cloudflare: fix the 307 and sitemap duplicates shows the whole case with the data from each attempt, and the lesson we took from it is that the sitemap has to name the address you actually serve.

One page per service a customer would search is the other half. Not one page per town with the service name swapped: Google reads those as doorway pages and an owner reads them as the same page ten times. One page for the service, in the language the customer searches in, and an area page only where the searches and the specifics justify one.

For the trades, the search often goes to the map before it goes to a page. In one tool's estimate, "septic tank service near me" draws about 12,100 searches a month and "drain cleaning near me" about 4,400, and for those searches Google shows the map pack first. We label that as one tool's number, not a measurement of ours. The point stands either way: for a trade, the Business Profile is the main lever and the service page is what the profile links to. Our Local SEO Foundation builds both, one page per service that earns it, with the profile set to match.

Business Profile and Website: Same Name, Same Phone

Your Business Profile is how Google decides you exist. Same name, same phone number, same category on the profile and on the site. A link from the site to the profile, and the profile's website field pointing back. When those agree, Google has an entity. When they drift, a competitor with a cleaner profile takes your own name.

Structured data is an optional layer on top of that, and it is not a ranking trick. Locan's guide to LocalBusiness schema markup shows the fields, and the two we use are the plain ones: the business's name and phone, and the sameAs list that names the profiles that are us. For a mobile tradesperson with no public address, the same markup can name the area served instead of a street. We agree with the guide's framing that the markup tells Google who you are; we would not attach any percentage to what it does for ranking, and we have seen none we trust.

Our own practice, set 2026-10-07. sameAs on our site lists the Google Business Profile, linked by its Maps address rather than a search link, and our Clutch profile. Each entry must open logged out and must link back to www.clevrstart.com. Bing Places is pending until its listing publishes. A directory whose free account has no public page was dropped. Our general professional services page shows the booking and intake that sit behind a profile like that.

Where a Booking Fits, and Who to Trust Before Paying

Each service page asks for one thing. On our site that is a booking, through one form, from every button. Not a quote form on one page and a phone number on another and a chat on a third. One ask, so the page can be measured on it.

What to make of agency pages. Many promise a first-place rank, or a percentage lift within a month. Those are promises without a source, and we treat them as marketing, not evidence; Google's hiring guide, linked above, says the same about anyone who guarantees a ranking. According to Pipedrive's guide, client acquisition is every step from lead generation to onboarding, a definition written for business-to-business sales, and we agree with it: SEO is the first step of that chain, not the chain.

Disclosure, plainly. clevrstart sells a local SEO plan, quoted after an evaluation; the Local SEO plan page shows the three steps, the monthly report and the data a client receives. The site, the accounts and the Business Profile are in your name from day one. We cannot promise a client count, and this page has none to show. The checklist and the do-and-don't guide come first and are free.

This week, in order: open Search Console and inspect one service page; add a link to it from your home page; open your Business Profile and match the name and phone to the site; make the page's one button a booking. Then read the page again next week, and tell us what moved.

Questions owners ask

01Why does Search Console show so many pages not indexed?
The dashboard counts every address Google ever found, including apps, logins and redirects you never wanted ranked. Check only the pages in your sitemap and read each page's inspection verdict, not the total.
