How big is the driveway?

How this is calculated

  1. The driveway size plus the walkway, divided by the ground one person clears in a minute (about 30 sq ft), gives the time per push.
  2. Time at the rate you want to earn, plus salt when ticked, plus a 35 % cushion for fuel, equipment and night starts, gives the price per push. The minimum is $30.
  3. The season contract is the per-push price × the pushes you expect, less 10 % for paying up front.
  4. The break-even is the number of storms at which per-push billing equals the contract. Fewer storms than that, and the contract earned you more.

Questions

01Should I offer a seasonal contract or charge per push?

Offer both. The contract gives you cash before the first storm and the client a fixed cost. Set the discount so that an average winter still pays you what per-push billing would.

02How many storms should I plan for?

Use the last five winters for your area, not last year alone. The mild, normal and hard tiles are about 15, 20 and 25 pushes; pick the one closest to your average.

03What about a snow removal contract?

Put the seasonal price, the number of storms it covers, the trigger depth and what happens above the cap in writing. Print this sheet as the pricing annex.

04How do I price salt?

Salt is a material cost per push, about $8 for a driveway. Tick it and the cushion is applied on top of it.

05Are taxes included?

No. Prices are before sales tax. Add your state or provincial tax on the quote.
